Good Digital Citizens

June 2018

So now that the EU has put their foot down and demanded everybody must declare what they are using its peoples’ personal information for, it has some flow on effects that not everyone was expecting in terms of GDPR compliance.

I know what you’re all thinking – I don’t do business with anyone in Europe! But if we look at the bigger picture, it is still in your best interest to be a good digital citizen. If our future-seeing abilities serve us well, the rest of the world will be following in the EU’s (digital) footsteps in no time.

So, how do you be a good digital citizen?

Step One

Read our previous blog about Cyber Attacks, which touches on the new GDPR Compliance laws here and get the basics on what the heck we are talking about.

Step Two

Think about what information you actually are collecting through your website. What do you do with it? Where is it stored? Is it protected?

Step Three

Put your musings from step 2 into words and let your customers know. The best way to do this is by updating the privacy policy on your website. Coincidently, WordPress has recently released a new feature for all websites that we are keen to take advantage of. Under your ‘Settings’ tab, there is a new ‘Privacy’ item. This fancy new feature actually creates a basic Privacy Policy for you, based on your website settings.

It does of course have quite a few blank spaces. It’s not quite smart enough to read your mind (yet) but it provides a great template to get you started.

We ourselves are currently updating our Privacy Policy, so stay tuned for that. I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

In terms of achieving 100% GDPR compliance for the EU citizens sake, Evolution is putting together a package that will give you the best start possible. This will be released in the coming weeks, so if you’re interested shoot us an email and we will contact you as soon as it’s ready.
